Comprehensive guide to take-home pay across different salary brackets
When you earn a salary in South Africa, your gross income is reduced by mandatory deductions before it reaches your bank account. Understanding these deductions helps you budget effectively and make informed career decisions.
Understanding your net salary matters because it determines your actual purchasing power, loan eligibility, and retirement planning capabilities.
South Africa's income tax system is progressive, meaning higher earners pay a larger percentage of their income in tax. Here's how your tax is calculated:
Your annual gross salary is divided into portions, and each portion is taxed at its applicable rate:
After calculating the gross tax, the primary rebate of R17,235 is deducted. This rebate applies to all taxpayers under 65 years of age and effectively makes the first portion of your income tax-free.
The annual tax (after rebate) is divided by 12 to determine your monthly PAYE deduction.
UIF is calculated as 1% of your gross monthly salary, capped at R177.12 per month (based on the maximum monthly pensionable earnings of R17,712).
If you contribute to a medical aid, you may qualify for additional tax credits of R364 per month for the main member and first dependant, and R246 for each additional dependant. These credits further reduce your monthly PAYE.
